WebFeb 23, 2009 · I got some bad tearout on birch when the base plate was not on the finished surface, that is with the roller bearing riding on the finished surface. Try a few practice cuts and you'll see what I mean. Glue up a practice piece with a couple of scraps. I also got some tearout on the speaker rebates using an upcut spiral bit.
